Methylmercury
and Neurological Problems
The
toxic
effects of methylmercury have
been well established, but recent
research indicates that cognitive
problems may develop at lower levels
of exposure than previously recognized.
A National Academy of Sciences panel
asserts that as many as 60,000 children
are born with neurological problems
as a result of methylmercury exposure.
Blood pressure and heart rate may
also be higher in these children.
The panel claims that while the effects
suffered by children exposed to lower
levels of methylmercury are subtle,
they may still have a significant
impact on learning, memory, and attention.

Preventing
Mercury Exposure From Thimerosal
Although
a connection between neurological
injury and exposure to ethylmercury
from thimerosal-containing vaccines
has not been proven, several studies
indicate that larger less frequent
doses of mercury may be more harmful
than smaller amounts consumed daily.
As a result, in 1999, the Food and
Drug Administration (FDA) along with
the American Academy of Pediatrics
(AAP) mandated the elimination of
thimerosal
from vaccines. The AAP also recommended
postponing Hepatitis B shots in infants
whose mothers tested negative, as
a means of reducing exposure to thimerosal
during the first six months of life.
The suggestion was controversial,
however, because children who received
their first Hepatitis B shots earlier
were more likely to complete the sequence.
Other measures intended to reduce
exposure to thimerosal include using
combination vaccine products, single
dose containers, and alternative preservatives.
